FC LOSES LEAGUE TITLE--May 4
This was FC's final home league game of the season, senior night, against the Caruthers Blue Raiders, May 4. Caruthers had previously played against FC on their home field and won 8-7, April 17. This time Caruthers showed their prowess again, winning 7-4.
FC came out firing on offense in the first, going up 2-0 under the hitting of Trevor York, '12, 2-2, and Adam Wood, '12, 1-2. In the second, Caruthers answered with one run of their own, but in the third and fourth both team's offense remained silent.
By the sixth however, Caruthers recaptured their lead, 4-3, and in the seventh Austin Rurik, '12, was able to steal home on a overthrown ball by the catcher to third, and tie the game, putting it into extra innings.
"I thought we had a good chance of winning this game," Ryan Neufeld, '12, said. "Our offense gets started quickly so I knew we had a good chance because the top of order was hitting too. We never give up when we're playing a team. We've come back from being down seven runs earlier in the year."
In the eighth inning however, Caruthers scored three runs and the Eagles were unable to surmount this obstacle.
"It's not fun; it's disappointing because we went in to league with high expectations to win it all," Rurik said. "We've now lost three games in league and it's a disappointing feeling, knowing we had a chance to do something that's never been done before and we failed at it."
Neufeld says he now just wants to set his sights on seeding for the playoffs.
"We just want to get ready for playoffs, get ready to go and pick up some momentum," Neufeld said. "And if we can get a big win over Fowler that will definitely help a lot."
The Eagles will next travel to play Fowler, May 8.
