Grandparents anticipate visiting students

The new gym filled for Grandparents Day on Sept. 7. Grandparents were given an introduction to the school and an opportunity to spend time in the classroom. Grandparents were given a sack lunch which they ate with their grandchildren in Ground Zero. They received the schedules of their grandchildren’s classes.

This day shows that grandparents make an impact by supporting with financing, prayer and emotional support. Many Grandmas give generously to their grandkids in different ways as well.

“My Grandma is very nice,” Jamie Meadows, ?03, said, “because she makes cookies, cakes, and pies to bring over to my house, even if it is no one’s birthday. My grandma came to Grandparents Day last year and brought me and Layne a pizza.”

Other students have the privilege of their grandparents or grandparent living nearby.

“I spend a lot of time with my grandma,” Ashley Tucker, ’05, said. “Every Friday and Saturday I go visit with my grandma. I like to watch my niece and talk with my grandma.”

Office administrator Kathy Pierce heads leadership for this special day up.

“I coordinate the lunches and get the class schedules for the grandparents,” Pierce said. “If there is more than one grandparent for each student, I’ll make more copies. Also if there is more then one grandchild I will staple the schedules together.”

This day means a lot to the grandparents.

“We get feedback throughout the year. We receive cards and notes from the grandparents throughout the year who respond positively to the event.”

Many grandparents go out of their way to spend time with their grandchildren.

” My grandparents pick me up from school,” Derrick Lehmen,’04, said. “Later I sometimes go dancing with my Grandma.”

“I usually spend one day a week with my grandparents,” Danny Fries, ’02, said. “My grandparents are nice, loving people that spoil me. I love getting together with them.”

Many students view their grandparents as their heroes and Grandparents Day may have just added to this mystic, providing a reason for the two to deepen their relationship.
