Autumn doesn’t officially begin until September 22, but I’m already in a cool-breeze-and-crunchy-leaves state of mind.

I grew up in Boston, where school always starts after Labor Day. By then the weather is already cooling down. Here in Fresno, we start school in the middle of August, when we’re still cooking in triple-digit temps.
For me, back to school means crisp jeans and a new sweater and thick socks and weather-resistant boots. But that mindset had to change (along with so many other things!) after I moved here. I send my boys to third and sixth grade in shorts and t-shirts now. The funny thing is, I put a hoodie in my third grader’s backpack in case the classroom gets too cold with the air conditioning blasting.
With changes in life – like from freedom to school and summer to fall – our wardrobe also needs to change. Sometimes the weather dictates our wardrobe, sometimes it’s dress code. Either way, we need to adjust to fit the proper time and place in which we find ourselves.

Sometimes the adjustment is slight, like putting on a jacket when the weather cools down. Other times the adjustment feels more drastic, like when my boys aren’t allowed to wear their beloved flip flops to school.
Either way, we have to adjust. It’s a part of life. Summer brings with it a lot of freedom. At home we can walk around in our bathing suits if we want. We can wear sandals or frayed denim shorts or ratty old t-shirts with holes in them. My boys love to run around shirtless. But when school begins, we need to bring things up a notch to reflect the respect that Fresno Christian deserves.
That does not mean you lose yourself in boring outfits. That just means you adjust your style to fit your environment. This happens to everyone every day – whether you’re dressing for church, for a corporate job, for formal, or for a night out with friends.
In my next blog I’ll share some tips on making a smooth transition from summer to fall. It’s so good to be back on The Feather and I look forward to hearing from all of you this year!
