A couple of months ago I bought a really cool t-shirt. It is red and says, “Make Fresno Great Again.” I love Fresno, so I couldn’t resist the purchase.

What makes this a unique situation is that I’m not really into t-shirts. As I posted a picture of myself on social media wearing it, I wrote the following caption:
I broke two of my personal fashion rules today:
I don’t wear t-shirts out of the house.
I don’t typically wear clothing with words on them.
I like to dress up and t-shirts don’t fit into the “dressy” category, so I usually just wear them as pajamas. And I really don’t like clothing with words on them, especially in high fashion. I don’t need to advertise which designers I happen to be wearing; the ones who know will know.
I say “personal fashion rules” because there are lots of rules in fashion and I believe that some rules were made to be broken. In fashion nowadays anything goes, so it’s okay to break a rule if it fits your personal style. For example, if you want to wear pink and red together, go ahead! If you want to wear white after Labor Day, be my guest!

Last week, however, all of my “personal fashion rules” went out the window because (drum roll, please) I went to sixth grade camp.
Sixth grade camp. Hume Lake. Outdoor education. Sequoia National Forest. It was beautiful! It was my first time there and I absolutely fell in love with it. However, and this is a BIG however, I could not wear my usual outfits up in the mountains! Let’s just say that stilettos were not made for hiking.
So what did I do? I wore sneakers. You heard me – sneakers. Not my cute, pristine-white Stan Smiths, either. Actual sneakers. And (Jesus forgive me) track pants. My fellow moms looked at me in horror as I was nearly unrecognizable. (Nope, that’s not dramatic at all.) And – AND – I wore t-shirts. Every.Single.Day.
I survived. I survived pushing myself out of my sartorial and physical comfort zones. I survived wearing 15-year-old track pants and shirts with words on them. I survived the windy drive along the edge of the cliffs. I survived classes and camp food and rec games and a cabin full of girls and sleeping on the top bunk.

And I loved every second of it.
Sometimes you need to explore something new, whether it’s an activity or an environment or people or clothing. You may hate it; you may love it. But you won’t know until you try it.
