New York’s top headshot photographer hangs out with The Feather team, offering advice about working with people behind the lens. Peter Hurley demonstrates his “squinch” technique, one of five posing tips he shares with the group in his studio, March 16.
Using Feather staffer Alex Rurik as his model, Hurley show how he helps subjects feel comfortable in front of the camera. Hurley strives to capture a personality rather then just a headshot.
“I may be shooting for their head but I’m aiming for their heart,” Hurley says.
He gave other pointers on how to find your best angle while, create a jawline, and sit up straight.
During high school, Hurley didn’t know what career to pursue. He became an Olympic sailing athlete in 2000. As he began a career in sailing he was also noticed and offered a modeling job for Abercrombie and Fitch. Soon after his friend, now mentor, Bruce Weber, told him to pick up a camera. From there he became a self-taught expert mastering the head shot.
Now he is known as the best headshot photographer in the City of New York. With over 13,000 photographers in 132 countries he is able to train photographers all over the world as part of his HeadShot Crew.
