Team prepares for final competition
After placing fifth at their last performance, the campus winter guard team returns for the championships. Performing their theatrical routine, “Welcome to the Dollhouse”, the junior high and high school winter guard prepares for their last competition of the San Joaquin Valley Color Guard and Percussion Review (SJVCGPR).
The competition takes place in the Clovis North gym at 1:02 p.m., March 24. Fresno Christian performs in the Regional Bronze Division, competing against Sanger High, Hoover High, Sunnyside High, Madera South, Firebaugh High, Roosevelt High and Chowchilla High.
The group hopes that advanced skills added to the “Welcome to the Dollhouse” routine will help them stand out among other schools while impressing the judges.
Lesley Bannister, campus instrumental music director, is proud of the accomplishments made over the winter guard season. She anticipates an exciting night and knows the team will keep improving.
“We have added bigger more challenging tosses for the performers and smaller things to make the show more cohesive,” Bannister said. “They have been putting in a lot of hours outside of the classroom, and it’s really showing in their performance. We’re excited to see how it works out for the final show.”
The coaches took the comments and feedback that they got from the last show and incorporated some of those changes and modifications into the routine. The team focused on cleaning and tightening up the routine for their final performance.
Freshman winter guard performer Brennen Tozlian works to improve his part for the championships. He practices engaging with the judges and refining his personal performance.
“We’ve been changing up stuff in our routine and making it the best that it can be,” Tozlian said. “I’m really excited for the judges to see that one last time. In this upcoming routine I have to catch a bunch of tosses on my knees which is kind of scary, but I’m proud of what we’ve done over the semester.”

Some guard members on the team return to the championships to compete for a higher score than last year. Winter guard veteran, Shauna Howard, ‘20, feels the team has stepped it up for the last performance and is confident they will do well.
“I’m really excited to see how we’ve improved throughout the season,” Howard said. “ We’ve changed a few of the ensemble tosses to higher tosses and I think our technique has improved. Our new guard members have picked up some skills rather quickly and I’m looking forward to see how everything plays out.”
The overall winner in each SJVCGPR division is honored with a with a trophy and individual medals. Winners are announced at 5 p.m. after all groups perform.
The event welcomes parents and students to attend and watch the performances. The entrance fee is $15 for adults and $10 for students.
