Giving thanks

Dear editor:

It’s the time of year where families start to get busy with holidays. They have family coming from all over, a lot of food to make and shopping that will take weeks to finish. But, with all of these distractions, we sometimes forget to stop, take a breath and think about how much we are blessed.

I spoke in chapel recently about how we should think about all the blessings we have and not take anything for granted. I showed a video about a young boy named Josiah Viera who is fighting for his life. This boy never complains about his problems in life; all he wants is to play baseball. He thanks God for every chance he gets to pick up a baseball bat.

I think we should look at this as a wake-up call for ourselves. Sometimes we complain about having to go to school, do homework, maybe even do a few chores. But the truth is that we are so blessed.

We are able to wake up in our own beds and go to a school where we are surrounded by people who love us. We might play a sport with our healthy bodies and go back home to families who only want the best for us. I imagine many people around us wish they were in our situation.

I think we should thank God for how he has blessed us. Let’s not let a day go by where we don’t thank the Lord for the things he has given us. Even if it is just a clean glass of water or being able to take a deep breath of fresh air, we are blessed.

While we take a break from our busy schedules, spend time with our families and eat great food, consider taking time to help others who are not as fortunate. Make time to seize blessings and share them, giving thanks to God.
