To demonstrate their growth over the semester, the music department will be performing at a variety of events during the month of March.
The first group is the junior high women’s chorus, which will sing at the annual FCS auction, March 12. In addition, the music department will donate a fireworks package to encourage support of the music department during the summer months, according to music director Michael Ogdon.
“Our music program will continue its support of the auction,” Ogdon said. “We are donating a $500 fireworks package from our Phantom Fireworks as a way of encouraging our school family to consider supporting FCS music later this summer, when it comes time to buy ‘safe and sane’ fireworks.”
On the same day, the percussion ensemble will perform at the Day of Percussion at California State University, Fresno, under the direction of percussion instructor Gary Smith.
Despite the small size of the ensemble, freshman Chloe Duerr says she looks forward to the event.
“I can’t wait for the Day of Percussion,” Duerr said. “Even though we’re small and this is our first time competing as a percussion ensemble, I know we will play to the best of our abilities.”
The music department will then come together for a spring instrumental concert in Ground Zero at 7 p.m., March 14.
In addition, both junior and senior high choirs will perform at Sierra Lutheran Church in Tollhouse at the California Music Association Choral Festival, March 15. Based on previous experiences, Ogdon says he has high hopes for the performances.
“We will be performing for three adjudicators who will judge the skill of our presentation according to statewide standards of excellence,” Ogdon said. “Our groups have fared very well in years past, and we expect high marks again.”
On March 19, percussion, woodwind trio, brass duet and five soloists will perform for adjudicators to obtain ratings at the CMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival at Fresno State. The groups, as well as several individual soloists, will be judged with the possibility of advancing to the State Finals later this year at a festival in Sacramento.
Finally, the spring choral department concert will take place in Ground Zero at 7 p.m., March 21.
