To resume an ongoing tradition, Clovis will present the 37th annual ClovisFest, Sept. 17-18. Over 70,000 people are expected to visit Pollasky Avenue in Old Town Clovis for this large-scale event.
Every year, ClovisFest begins with a hot air ballon festival at the Clovis Rodeo grounds. Preparation for their liftoff begins at 5 a.m., where people can come early to see the flames ignite the blimps. Hot cinnamon rolls will be served to spectators, as they watch the balloonists begin to launch between 6-7 a.m., depending on weather conditions.
Across the street, over 250 vendors fill the avenue with booths containing food, crafts and gifts available for purchase. Peddlers vary from locals to people from out of town, providing many unique items.
In addition, ClovisFest features a variety of attractions such as a full carnival, and the All Car Show. Live bands also perform for the crowds in an effort to offer fun for patrons.
Freshman John Dooman enjoyed the activity-filled fair during his visit last year.
“I had fun because I hung out with friends and ate food while listening to the live bands,” Dooman said. “I’ll definitely go back again sometime.”
Fran Blackney, communications director at the Clovis Chamber of Commerce, believes the event will be a great source of weekend entertainment for all.
“It’s free, a family festival, safe with police presence and a nice time filled with fun,” Blackney said. “Many different ages come for different attractions.”
Blackney also mentioned the financially benefit for the community, regardless of the economic situation.
“The City of Clovis estimated the Big Hat Day and ClovisFest bring in about $6 million,” Blackney said. “The community gains a ripple effect from the customer’s money.”
