Welcome to Health Nut
[media-credit id=122 align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]Health Nut is a second year blog on The Feather that deals with (you guessed it) Health. Contrary to popular belief, health involves more than a tan beach body and unpalatable protein shakes. In my opinion, metal and spiritual wellbeing are just as important as doing fifty sit ups in a minute (if not more so). Though this blog is not intended to be a therapy session, it will occasionally dive into the more emotional realm of health and will integrate biblical concepts into the content.
This doesn’t mean Health Nut will continually confront the barrier between body and soul on a weekly basis. If you look back at previous posts (which I highly encourage) you will find a wide variety of subjects, moods and messages. Everything from sarcasm, to puns, to corny jokes, to advice about life choices, will and has appeared on Health Nut. The main objective personally, is that readers walk away with a sound piece of advice that will shape them physically, spiritually and mentally.
Health Nut really came to me rather than me coming to it. When my good friend Emily Ladd inquired as to whether I would be interested in a blog, the writer inside me screamed ‘YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES’. The shy girl outside of me just nodded.
The combination of two of my greatest loves, writing and health seemed natural and so Health Nut was birthed.
“Ok,” you might be saying, “So you wanted to write a creative blog about heath. Big deal it’s still going to be boring because health is boring.”
Some of my least favorite memories as a child were watching video clips about the food pyramid in elementary school; the monotone voice telling eight year olds to stay away from candy like it was the plague, the bubbly overly excited hosts, the talking vegetables. I admit learning about health can be boring, in the case of elementary food pyramid lessons, obnoxious.
Yet it doesn’t have to be. Health is in actuality fascinating when it is applied to real life circumstances and people. Health doesn’t just symbolize a trim waist; health is the happiness, the wellbeing of individuals. Health is stability. Health shows self worth. Health is determination. Health is selflessness. Health glorifies Gods.
Why do we need sleep? How do we know when we are overworked? Which foods are the best for your needs? How can you make your brain function faster? How do you stop letting what you see in the mirror affect your outlook on life and on your workout sessions?
These questions are certainly not boring. On the contrary they contain key concepts that interests and affects the average person. Anything is boring if presented in the wrong way. The truth is that nothing is boring at all.
Beyond the fascinating subjects associated with health is the utter importance of it. Even for young people health stands as a major issue.
An average of 95% of eating disorders are found to be in the 12-25.8 age range (ANAD), about 17% of children in America are considered obese (CDC), approximately 80,000 young people struggle with severe depression (Young Mind Professionals) and 14% of 18-19 year olds decide each year that church no longer satisfies their needs and fall away (The Exchange).
The world is in pain and very much needs a doctor. Physical medical men and women can only mend. Psychologists can only sooth. Writers can only write. Preachers can only preach. In the end mankind is but an instrument. We are the physician’s tools, his words, his arms, his love.
God is the ultimate physician. He heals physically, mentally and spiritually. As Christians it is our responsibility to pursue this health. A health made perfect in God. In this way we may become more effective instruments and fulfill the needs of this damaged world.
Health Nut’s Bible verse of the year is 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
Through a deeper knowledge about health, we can reach out to others in the name of Christ as well as present ourselves as clean vessels before the Lord.

I look forward to exploring the world of health with you this year. Truth be told I’m no fitness guru but I am a bit nutty.
The choice is yours. Will you be nutty about health?
