Muniz shapes fellow players, guides teammates with diligence

Seniors Olivia QuebeSierra DuffyKristina Muniz and Brittany Bender have been the driving force behind the FC girls volleyball team. Tuesday, Nov. 3, was the game that marked the end of the girls’ high school volleyball career. The Feather would like to highlight one of the girls each day, to give a glimpse into their relationship with volleyball and their plans for the future.

Kristina Muniz, ‘16, has attended FC for three years, first joining second semester of her freshman year. Although her family moved to San Francisco her junior year, she returned to finish her high school career at FC.

Muniz started playing volleyball in fifth grade at Fugman Elementary and joined the team at FC her sophomore year. After making varsity her first year, Muniz’s love for the sport grew.

“My sophomore year, I finally decided to try out for the volleyball,” Muniz said. “Once I made the varsity team, I started to find my passion for the sport and that passion was what kept me playing volleyball.”

Over the years, Muniz has contributed to her team defensively by taking the position of defensive specialist. Taking on this role is a big responsibility so Muniz has always made a goal of improving.

At the beginning of the season my goal was to become a better player and improve my skills. I will always have aspects of the game to work on, however, I think I have accomplished this goal of improvement. Giving myself this mindset has bettered my passing a lot. — Kristina Muniz, ’16

“At the beginning of the season my goal was to become a better player and improve my skills,” Muniz said. “I will always have aspects of the game to work on, however, I think I have accomplished this goal of improvement. Giving myself this mindset has bettered my passing a lot.”

Muniz looks back on her volleyball career and sees her senior year as one of the best seasons. Some of her greatest memories are with her team on and even off the court.

“Most highlights during my volleyball career were during high school,” Muniz said. “I would have to say majority of the highlights came from this year. Something I will always remember are our pregame warm-up rituals in the showers.”

Although Muniz has enjoyed the sport, she does not plan on playing in college. Some of the things she will miss the most are the girls she has created friendships with.

“Of course I will miss playing the sport because it has been a part of my life so many years,” Muniz said. “I think the biggest thing I will miss is bonding with my teammates and making so many memories with them.”

For the future, Muniz plans to attend Clovis Community College for two years and then transfer to California State University San Francisco where she will study nursing. She plans to use the teamwork skills she has gained from volleyball to help her in her future career.
