Coldplay is back to promote their upcoming album A Head Full of Dreams with a new single that blends their previous styles together.

The song “Adventure of a Lifetime” is a bouncy, trance-like dance song. The tune is catchy and reminiscent of the band’s album Mylo Xyloto with the lyrics of some of their older songs. The music encourages listeners to move around and dance along. It’s fit for listening, driving, dancing, you name it. The lyrics are poetically vague, akin to their usual style.

The opening of the song is intriguing and hooks you before reeling you in. It’s a bit different for Coldplay, but you can hear the roots of their old music in it. At a point, lead singer Chris Martin sings ‘I can feel my heart beating’, only accompanied by bass and a beat. The sound mimics the beat of a heart, a clever and compelling sound. with the sudden silence of the other instruments.

As far as the lyrics go, it’s the usual vague story that accompanies some of Coldplay’s more synth based songs. Martin sings about Umi, assumedly a person he knows. Martin sings that she told him of his worth and that ‘everything you want’s a dream away’. He continues to sing:

Said I can’t go on, not in this way/I’m a dream that died by light of day./Gonna hold up half the sky and say/Only I own me/And I feel my heart beating/I feel my heart underneath my skin/Oh I can feel my heart beating/Cause you make me feel/Like I’m alive again — Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay.

In the end Martin sings that if this is the only life, the only adventure we get, he wants to ‘share it with you’. The song spins a story of someone searching for fulfillment, to feel alive again and achieve their dreams.

I’m interested to see what the whole album is like, with hints of their new and old styles meshed into this song. The previous album Ghost Stories being slower and calm, it would be fun to see the variety of synth dance songs from the band.

Compared to their past ventures, “Adventure of a Lifetime” is more like recent song “Sky Full of Stars” and the tracks from Mylo Xyloto. Personally, I prefer Mylo Xyloto and over this single, but the song is still enjoyable and successfully brings excitement for the rest of the album.

Overall, the song is a bouncy melody about someone searching for fulfillment. However, it’s doubtful the song is about finding fulfillment in God. “Adventure of a Lifetime” is a fun dance song without much meat in the lyrics, but darn if it isn’t a catchy tune.

A Head Full of Dreams will be Coldplay’s seventh studio album. Their first, titled Parachutes, was released in 2000. They recently released another single from A Head Full of Dreams titled Everglow. The album will be released on Dec. 4.
