The end of the First World War formed a national holiday of armistice declared by president Woodrow Wilson in 1919. It wasn’t until nearly 50 years later however that November 11 was officially renamed armistice day to Veterans Day. The 96th annual Veterans Day parade brought thousands of spectators to downtown Fresno for the largest Veterans Day parade on the West Coast.
This year’s parade brought a variety of military groups ranging from the Vietnam Veterans, to the Marine Corps. The parade selects a different branch of the military to be honored each year. This year’s parade honoree was the U.S. Navy, which includes a variety of Navy related floats throughout the parade. The parade kicked off with the National Anthem in front of Fresno City Hall, and ended in Chukchansi park. Grand Marshal and Naval Captain Monty Ashliman spoke to thousands on the sacrifice of the veterans just prior to the parade. KSEE 24 news was there broadcasting the event live for everyone who wasn’t able to come out to the event.
Families gathered all around the streets to get a desirable view of the patriotic event throughout the sunshine filled day. The crowds were very enthusiastic towards the veterans and cheering could be heard continuously through the parade. Every single veteran had a pivotal role in this year’s Veterans Day Parade, and each and every one has forever earned their title as a hero in our hearts.
