Style Session No. 13 – Golden Globes Roundup
The 73rd Annual Golden Globes kicked off this year’s awards season on Sunday night. As always, the red carpet pre-show is just as exciting as the main event, because we all know it’s all about what people are wearing, right?
Some people get a kick out of pointing out the fashion disasters on popular celebrities, but I’d rather stick with the positive. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the evening.
Zendaya looked flawless in a deep red Marchesa gown. The ruffles add a lot of texture and volume, so she was smart to keep her beauty look low-key with her hair in a simple middle-part and pulled-back waves accompanied by minimal jewelry. Sure, it’s easy to look gorgeous when you’re tall and thin, but Zendaya (or her stylist) always seems to make smart choices to present herself in a classy way while still preserving her youthfulness. The front of this dress is a bit low cut, but fortunately everything stayed put (thank you, magic sticky tape!).
Alicia Vikander chose an elegant white belted Louis Vuitton column gown with shimmery vertical stripes. The Swedish actress starred in six films in 2015, and is making her Hollywood presence known. The pretty detailing around the neckline and shoulders of her dress draws attention toward her face, and you can’t help but notice those gorgeous drop earrings.
I loved Cate Blanchett in a pale pink Givenchy Couture gown (customized straight off the runway). I know not everyone will agree with this one, but I adore Cate’s style. She always looks classy but she is not afraid to take risks and push the envelope when it comes to her style choices. It takes confidence to stray from the norm and she pulled it off and really stood out on the red carpet.
Men tend to play it safe on formal occasions, usually opting for a classic black or navy tuxedo. And you can’t really go wrong with a classic tux, except that everyone starts to look the same. Eddie Redmayne spiced things up with a Gucci tux with bees on the jacket. I love a bit of whimsy! It’s okay to have fun with fashion.
The cutest couple award goes to David and Jessica Oyelowo. David absolutely killed it in this incredible Dolce & Gabbana tux. He’s one of very few men who dared to wear bold colors to the show. He showed his personal flair without going crazy – although the color and print are on the wilder side, the three-piece suit is still a classic silhouette. And Jessica smartly kept it simple in a black satin gown.
And now, a couple of surprises. Lady Gaga wowed the crowd in a chic and sophisticated custom Versace gown. Channeling her inner Marilyn Monroe was much more successful than that raw meat ensemble from a few years ago. And who says you can’t age gracefully and fashionably? Jane Fonda pulls off a really fun and forward look by Saint Laurent Couture. She looks amazing for 78, don’t you think?

I don’t watch the Golden Globes, but I enjoyed looking at some of the outfits you chose to talk about. I love Lady Gaga’s dress, which looks so flattering. I also like Zendaya’s dress, which looks great on her. If I were a celebrity attending the Golden Globes, I’d get a kick out of dressing in an ethereal, quirky style. 😀
