From a German chocolate layer cake to a chocolate molten lava cake, there are many options to indulge for National Chocolate Cake day, Jan. 27.

Though the origin of this holiday is unknown,  according to Nationaldaycalender.com the first recipe of chocolate cake came about in 1847 in a Lady’s Recipe book. Before then people only consumed chocolate in beverages. Since the birth of this delicious treat cooks from around the world have invented a variety of ways to make chocolate cake.
