New club offers space to practice creative writing
In the spring semester of the 2015-’16 school year, FC campus seniors Emily Ladd, Nicole Hudecek and Skyler Lee are leading a writing club, which allows students to practice creative writing.
The club meets every Monday at lunch in English teacher Kyle Dodson’s room, 623. The hosts of the club invite campus students to come and share, encourage others, give helpful insight and write freely.
Lee helped to start the group and hopes to create a space where students are free to explore an interest in creative writing.
“We founded this club to provide a space for students at this school to explore an interest in creative writing,” Lee said. “There is not much structure. It is just a place to share, get encouragement and insight. I hope that students are able to take the ideas they form in this time and become inspired to expand those thoughts.”
Alexis Kalugin joined the club to help enhance her own writing. Her goal is to continue to develop her method of communicating thoughts.
“I decided to join writing club because I wanted to support my friends and I wanted to find an outfit that would push me in my writing,” Kalugin said. “I am expecting to learn how to improve my writing. I love to blog a lot of my thoughts. I hope to find ways to improve how I convey my thoughts to the readers. I think other students who enjoy writing stories will really enjoy writing club. It is a safe place to share your writing pieces and connect with other people who understand what it is like being a writer. ”

The opportunity is structured to encompass a loose, relaxed feeling. Senior Julianna Rosik is looking forward to collaborating with other students and using other students’ feedback to improve her writing.
“I joined the writing club because I enjoy creative writing and wanted to get feedback on my writing from my peers,” Rosik said. “I am expecting to learn how to better communicate my ideas and what techniques I can use to make my writing more interesting. I think that the other students in the club joined for similar reasons and will respond well to the feedback they receive.”
Ladd, another co-founder, is excited to bring a new feature to the school. She is aiming to bring aspects found outside the school and input them into the school.
“I really enjoyed writing club last year, and participated in one outside of school for awhile as well,” Ladd said. “It was super fun to meet other writers and relate to them and break out of my shell to share what I’ve written. Hearing what other people write and getting feedback when I shared did amazing things to my writing. Since there isn’t a creative writing class at school, I thought a community of other writers at Fresno Christian would be helpful, letting students explore their hobbies and realize they aren’t alone.”
For anyone looking for an opportunity to practice creative writing among friends, think about the writing club to help bolster writing skills. All questions can be directed to either Ladd, Hudecek, Lee or Dodson.
