The week of April 4 – April 8, 2016, the Eagles tennis team played in only one league matchup against Dos Palos HS. This week on Tuesday, the Eagles had their second bye of the season which gave them a break and more time to prepare for their opponents on Thursday.
FC faced Dos Palos in a league game, Thurs. April 7. The last competition between these teams, the Eagles took the victory 8-1 losing only their third doubles game by forfeit of not having enough players. This time the Eagles looked for redemption and sought to take a demanding 9-0 victory.
The determination throughout the players was reinforced by the coaches Rob Foshee and Daniel Jessing. Throughout the week they stressed the idea of competing and set the players minds on giving it your all regardless of the situation. The Eagles came out and truly competed. They had a new ladder due to recent ladder matches played during practice which left the top six in this order: Andrew Moore, Zach Passmore, Jarrod Markarian, Julian Castro, Nick LeBlanc and Jaden Ventura.
The first four singles games went in favor of the Eagles winning all four giving the team a 4-0 lead over Dos Palos. With only one win left to win the match, FC continued to push for their victory. Nick LeBlanc played his first varsity singles game at no. 5 and won 8-1. Jaden Ventura also won no. 6 singles which added to the Eagles wins although they had already won the match.
With just the doubles games left to go, the boys pressed on searching for the 9-0 victory. No. 3 was won by forfeit of the other team not having enough players and no. 2 doubles was won with little stress as Julian Castro, ‘17, and Reese Brown, ‘19, won that game 8-4. Moore and Passmore were the only match left and played a tough one. At one point during the match they were down by a few games but knew that if they wanted to reach their goal they would have to be strong mentally and play well physically to get the win. They did just that winning their match 8-5.
Junior Roy Brown understands what the team accomplished to achieve the win and knows what the team needs to do to continue to win in the season.
“We kept the right mindset throughout the whole match and played better than them,” Brown said. ” For the rest of the season we need to use the momentum that we have from this game to go on and win league.”
With one goal in mind a unified team mentality, the Eagles were able to take a win over Dos Palos 9-0. The boys are now 7-2 in league and look to improve their score when they play Fowler and Riverdale next week.
