History students make day trip to San Francisco, April 6
Of the many famous artists who have influenced human history, Monet, Rodin and Raphael are among the many household names. Art has undoubtedly played an important role in human history. Because of this, Kori Friesen’s AP European history class went to see paintings by these artists and various others at the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, April 6.
While learning in the classroom is the norm, it can also be beneficial to experience history outside. Friesen believes it was important to make this trip, because of the new understanding that she believes it instills into her scholars.
I thought the museum was interesting. It was filled with a lot of Christian and Renaissance art, It also had lots of statues that I enjoyed as well. I feel it’s important to look at art, because each art piece represents a historical event and the mood of the time period. Art portrays peoples views of either their government, social life, economy or even religious state of the time period. This trip is valuable because it opens up peoples minds to different authors/painters that all had different viewpoints of the struggle they experienced during their lifetime. — Trevor Trevino
Josiah Weimer, ‘16, a history student in the class commented on his experience in the museum. He expressed his awe with the art pieces featured.
“I greatly enjoyed the Legion of Honor Museum,” Weimer said. “It had many great pieces of art, and it was a great place to learn about art periods. It was awesome to see works by names such as Monet and Raphael, and it was a very educational experience for me. The variety of the art pieces in the museum were very impressive to me. There were works from medieval times, the Italian and Northern Renaissance, the Romantic period, the period of impressionism and many more. I was also impressed with the layout of the museum, which allowed viewers a panorama of famous art.”
Trevor Trevino, ’17, talked about his impression of the Legion of Honor museum, and how it represented time eras from the past.
“I thought the museum was interesting,” Trevino said. “It was filled with a lot of Christian and Renaissance art. It also had lots of statues that I enjoyed as well. I feel it’s important to look at art, because each art piece represents a historical event and the mood of the time period. Art portrays peoples views of either their government, social life, economy or even religious state of the time period. This trip is valuable because it opens up people’s minds to different authors/painters that all had different viewpoints of the struggle they experienced during their lifetime.”
Jenny King, ‘17, talked about how attending this museum was a valuable experience from her perspective.
“My favorite painting was the work done by Raphael in the special exhibit,” King said. “The painting was The Lady and Her Unicorn. It was very interesting to see the recovery process of bringing the painting back to life. I liked seeing the paintings from different time periods. They shed some light on the problems and discoveries of that time. Even though I didn’t know much about art, I felt like I learned more about different styles and periods of art.”
The museum is located in Lincoln Park, San Francisco, and has a wide selection of paintings ranging from ancient to medieval. For more information about the museum, visit the Legion of Honor Museum website.
