Alumni, coaches, and others from the community are dusting off their golf clubs and practicing their swing in preparation for the second annual golf tournament in support of FC athletics. The tournament will take place on April 25th on the golf course at Copper River Country Club.
The money raised from the event will benefit the sports department and give them some of the necessary funds needed for the next school year. Jon Penberthy, FC physical education teacher as well as the boys basketball coach, will help put on the event this year.
Penberthy expects close to one hundred people will attend the tournament. Most who attend will be alumni or coaches, but many attending will simply be those in the community who wish to help out the school.

“We have everybody from alumni, to parents, to business owners, some of our coaches are competing and also really a lot of support from our community,” Penberthy said. “We have close to one hundred participants. This is only our second year doing this.”
The tournament will aid many different aspects of the athletics department. The money will go towards new uniforms and equipment for a variety of sports teams. Penberthy believes this is a great way to support the athletics program.
“(The money raised) will go straight into each sport,” Penberthy said. “In a way it will go to the athletic department but it will go into different things like uniforms, sports equipment, training equipment and sending our coaches to different clinics. So it really goes into a variety of things.”
Mike Zamarripa participated in the golf tournament last year and looks forward to competing once again this year.
“My team and I had a great time last year,” Zamarripa said. “My favorite part was seeing everyone support our Fresno Christian athletes by coming out and playing in the tournament. I’m most looking forward to hopefully winning. I think it’s a good way for the school to raise money.”
The golf tournament will feature a four person scramble. Participants have the opportunity to win awards for the lowest team score, the longest drive, closest to the hole as well as for making a hole in one. Check in begins at 10 o’clock a.m. and a buffet style lunch will be provided between 11:15 and 11:45 a.m.
