New Marvel film offers unique plot

I have seen the majority of Marvels superhero movies, from Captain America Civil War to Antman and I have enjoyed them. But this movie is different than it’s predecessors, it fits in a class of it’s own apart from the others.

There are a variety of things about this film that lend it to be in it’s own category. First is the main character, Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) a brilliant egotistical brain surgeon who has dedicated his life to helping others and developing new cures.

But his life is shattered when he loses the use of his hands in accident and is unable to continue with his work. Devastated by his inability to do what he loves, he is nearly driven to insanity and searches everywhere for a treatment for his hands.

Eventually he hears of some healers in the a place called Kathmandu, who are able to heal injuries that are virtually impossible to heal via western medicine. He spends the last of his money getting to this place desperate to have his hands restored.

He wanders trying to find this place until he is found by Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a master at Kathmandu. He then is brought to the master of Kathmandu, the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) who teaches Strange to overcome his pride and arrogance.

This gives the story a hero who not only struggles but is also flawed both by his inability and by his pride.

A second thing that makes this movie different is the nature of the conflict. Instead of soldiers or super weapons, the story is centered on regular humans who utilize “magic” to harness energy from other universes. This makes the very nature of the movie different.

Another aspect that sets this movie apart is it’s phenomenal special effects, which greatly augments the film allowing the audience to become immersed in the movie. This creates a very visually stunning movie.

A third aspect that also improved the movie was casting, I felt that Benedict Cumberbatch was an excellent choice and excelled in his role as Doctor Strange. He did a good job of balancing drama and comedy. Which leads me to the comedy, which was something I did not really expect in this movie; but was present and very well executed.

These aspects make this movie different from your average Marvel movie I enjoyed these differences and found them to be refreshing.

However, one thing I didn’t like about this movie is that it’s special effects were often to dizzying for my taste; almost to the point of motion sickness. Despite this I would definitely go and see this movie again and highly recommend that you do as well.
