As the years pass, the popular campus tradition, the annual girl’s powder puff football tournament, has been hosted before each Thanksgiving break. This year’s competition was held on Nov. 19 with the sophomores beating the seniors 22-8 in the final.
Senior Hillary Kell posed as quarterback and tight end in the female quarrels.
“Every year the class of 2005 has been a dominant team, well except for our freshmen year,” Kell said. “This year we were just a bit under motivated and less people came out to play but we still toughed it out.”
As the yellow and blue flags were ripped from around their waists, the girls’ joyous screams echoed off the gym wall and reverberated in the ears of some spectators.
“The one thing I like about the game is that I get to see girls tear at each other and be vicious,” Chapman Hutchins, ’06, said. “I see my sisters fight sometimes but it’s nothing like this.”
Strategy dominates on the field. Some classes plan practices and coaches spend time creating plays that the girls can understand.
“Everyone just did a really good job,” Jessica Berg, ’07, said. “Even though we had practices they didn’t help us that much, we just had good coaches.”
