Fresno Convention Center hosts annual fair, Sept. 14
The Fresno Area College Fair was hosted at the Fresno Convention Center for another year. This event was well anticipated and was a stopping point for students who are wanting to attend college at some point in their life. A crowd of students, faculty and parents from all around the Fresno area gathered to look at the wide variety of colleges.
Colleges from all over the country were there with their representatives from the Fresno area, taking part in the Fresno Area College Fair. Selma native and Grand Canyon University representative, Toby Garza is known for his work at his college. He has been attending the Fresno Area College Fair for almost five years.
“All of the representatives that we bring are from around the area,” Garza said. “We do not bring anyone from the Phoenix area to come and recruit students to come to our university. All of our staff works extremely hard every year for this event to go well. We definitely want to have students from the valley to come to our college so they can experience something new.”
Education is most important in modern day families. Not every person is going to be a star athlete or a well known musician. Families all across the area want their child to succeed. With the seniors who have not picked their college yet, this was a very important event for them.
Colleges always have a pitch to students who might be interested in that specific college. Yale representative, Tony Losigna speaks on what kind of pitch he would be sending students that would be committed to Yale.
“Yale is a very big university,” Losigna said. “We want the valley to know what there is to offer out of it. I think it is important for us to reach out to the students in the valley that Yale can be a landing point for them. We offer not just a great education but an amazing environment for students to come and learn from each other.”
Students were rushing to get to booths all across the hall. Colleges were lined up with such things as planners, dates of functions, and free merchandise from that specific school. Representatives from schools kept coming back to this particular event. They always came back with new things to persuade the students that are there to attend their school in the future.
Marcie Braggs, Reedley College representative, has been attending the college fair for the past 15 years. New things must be implemented for representatives to persuade students to come to their college.
“I keep coming back to this event because I love it,” Braggs said. “We just implemented a new system last year where we reach out to most of the seniors and get to know them. The reason why we are so focused on seniors is because they are the ones that are graduating and they are the ones who are looking to go to a college right away. We want them to know them to know that we are willing to give them a good education and a good surrounding area for them.”
Yet another college night was packed with students, excitement and fun. With the large amounts of representatives and the participation of students, the Fresno Area College fair is bound to get better every single year.
