Royal Battle excites student body
The fourth day of homecoming week kicked off with the dress up theme of, ‘Into the Wild.’ Students filled the hallways dressed up as their favorite animal. As the week is close to wrapping up, classes are scrambling to score as many points as possible, in hopes that their class can win it all.
Many students have been dressing up all week while others have not. Zach Passmore, ’17, dressed up for the first time this week. He is looking forward to seeing all of the floats.
“I decided to dress up today since I haven’t done anything all week,” Passmore said. “Today I wore a shirt with a whale on it. I am excited for Friday night because I can’t wait to see all the floats. I think the seniors did a great job on our float.”
Despite the dress up, the real headline of the day was the annual, Royal Battle. The dance was hosted by english and drama teacher, Kyle Dodson. The kings and queens danced to many songs including, Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae), Thriller and Can’t Stop the Feeling.
The five king candidates were: Julian Castro, Phillip Christopher, Daniel Ayers, Roy Brown and Trevor Trevino.
The queen candidates were: Sydney Belmont, Olivia Palmer, Jenny King, Brookie Ainley and Hannah Nale.
After weeks of preparation and a couple of last minute changes, Phillip Christopher, ’17, felt that the dance went great. He thought it was an honor that the senior class elected him as a candidate.

“It was a honor that my class would nominate me,” Christopher said. “I’m glad I was elected and it was a great opportunity. I had a lot of fun with it and I thought the dance went well. We had a few last minute changes but I thought we did a really good job especially since we aren’t really used to performing in front of big crowds.”
Queen candidate, Sydney Belmont ,’17, enjoyed getting to know the other queens better. She thought that the performance went well and was impressed with how well the kings did.
“Being a queen was a ton of fun,” Belmont said. “I enjoyed getting to know the other queens better. We all got along well which made the process a lot easier. The dance was really good and I loved watching the kings. I didn’t expect them to perform that well. Both groups worked hard and put on a great show.”
Among the students was controversy regarding who won the battle. Amanda Grimmius, ’19, enjoyed this year’s dance and thought it was much more energetic. She believes that the kings won the dance.
“I thought this year’s dance was a lot more energetic,” Grimmius said. “There was a lot more planned and much more going on. My favorite part was the guy’s Micheal Jackson dance. Personally, I think that the kings won.
At the end of the performance, the audience decided who won. Based off of the applauds and cheers, the queens were awarded the victory.
Friday’s homecoming theme will be spirit wear. There will also be a home football game against Kings Christian at 7 p.m. Before the game, the returning players from last year’s team will be presented with their valley championship rings. Come out and support your Eagles!
