As the fall season begins, the school year brings back homecoming, an event that contains the homecoming court, a football game, and the displaying of the class floats. This year the sophomores decided to base their float on the 40s, going with the theme of Decades.
The sophomore float is based around a soda bar, with lots of war propaganda. The float will involve a bar with soda dispensers on top, and a camouflage background. Chairs will surround the bar, and the floor will have a checkered pattern.
The costumes are mainly based on the time of the war. The girls wear either polka dots or Rosie the Riveter costumes, and the boys wear uniforms or a suit and tie.
The sophomores worked every weekend, and setting up the base of the float. Suky Cheema, ‘19, held the first float building meeting at his house so the class could get started.
One of the things Cheema remembered about homecoming last year was how exciting everything was, so he decided to help organize the float. He loved working on the float with his classmates for hundreds of people to see.
“I love that our classmates can bond together building the float and those who haven’t gotten to know each other can do that during the float building,” Cheema said. “But one of the things I’m most excited about for homecoming is the week leading up to it. It gets me excited every year because of all the events that take place and it’s really fun with all of the dress up days and seeing you and your friends just having a good time.”

Although Macie Thompson got elected as one of the sophomore princesses and cannot participate on the float, she still helped build it with her classmates to bond with them and have fun. She is excited to see the results of the float homecoming night.
“My favorite part about building the float was painting it because everyone did a fantastic job at it,” Thompson said. “I hope our beverage stand works out because I would love to support my class and enjoy a beverage. I’m really excited for homecoming night because I love seeing all the floats and what place each class gets.”
Some sophomores were unable to participate in the building of the float due to busy schedules. Although Ashley Zamarripa, ‘19, missed out on the float building she is still looking forward to homecoming and the week leading up to it.
“I would’ve loved to help with the float because it would’ve been fun to put it together and hangout with friends,” Zamarripa said. “I hope our float looks great this year and that it most resembles the decade we chose. I am looking forward to homecoming because I want to see who wins on the homecoming court and how our float turns out.”
Dress up days and activities will last all week. Come out and support your class and also the football team on homecoming night, Oct. 7.
