Big Fresno Fair hosts competitive contest
Every year, the Big Fresno Fair organizes an annual chalk art competition. Art students traveled from around the Central Valley to the fairgrounds to put their skills to the test and compete against other students while representing their school. The competition took place on Oct. 11 by the pavilion.
This year, art teacher Vicky Belmont brought three girls, including Cayla Rivas, ‘18, Sydney Belmont, ‘17, and Brooke Ainley, ‘17. They worked together as a team to create their chalk masterpiece.
While FC students have competed for the last couple years, this was new art teacher Vicky Belmont’s first occasion leading students in the fair’s contest. Belmont was pleased with the outcome of the challenge.
“The chalk art competition was a group of schools that went out to the Fresno Fair,” Belmont said. “We designed a large chalk board of something that pertained to the fair, Halloween, October or anything like that. I think ours looked the most realistic while everything else was sort of cartoonish. Anytime you can get your name out into the public it’s a good idea to let them know that we do have an art program and we participate in a lot of different things.”
In her second year competing in the chalk art competition, Cayla Rivas, ’18, enjoys the opportunity to be creative.
“This is my second year doing this,” Rivas said. “It’s fun to be creative, but I’m not pleased with how we did. Along with the competition, I have two colored pencil drawings in the fair and both got first place and one got a people’s choice award.”
Cayla Rivas has entered their art in the junior exhibit contest. The fair started Oct. 5 and will end Oct. 16.
