Every month The Feather will highlight one student recommended by a teacher and chosen by a Feather staff member. Students are chosen depending upon several factors including but not limited to good grades, class engagement, positive attitude and special extracurricular activities.
The student of the month for October is freshman Wesley Hinton. Hinton has grown up in a Christian home with his parents, Sam and Dawn and his two siblings, Max, ’22, and Lyla, ’25. He has attended FC since kindergarten, also known as a ‘lifer.’
English teacher Kyle Dodson recommended Hinton because of his wisdom, strong work ethic and class participation.
“I chose Wesley, because he exhibits a wisdom that not many students his age can possess,” Dodson said. “He is very hard working, and I can always trust him. Wesley’s humbleness is pleasing. I enjoy his participation, he is a strong member to have in the class setting.”
While Wesley enjoys English class, he would also consider biology a favorite subject of his. He enjoys the many hands on activities, as well as studying animals. Participating in the school sports programs is important for Wesley. He enjoys being able to bond with others while improving his skills.
“The sports that I am participating in this year are soccer and track,” Hinton said. “I have been doing soccer since I was in Kindergarten, and track since seventh grade. In past years I have been involved in tennis and baseball.
“In soccer I have played wing and striker, and in track I do the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter, long jump and triple jump,” Hinton contined. “I like doing sports, because it gives you a chance to get to know people better, and get better at the sport.”
Teammate and close friend Blake Deffenbacher, ‘20, enjoys spending time with Wesley. He finds it easy to connect with him, because of the many similarities between the two of them.
“The things that I love most about Wes are his sense of humor and his ability to keep you responsible,” Deffenbacher said. “We have a very strong connection, it almost like we have telepathy. We also have many similarities: playing soccer, water sports, and we both want to make America great again.”
Some things that Wesley likes to do in his free time are go boating up at the lake and participate in outdoor activities. He enjoys going to Millerton Lake and Bass Lake.
While at the lake the Hinton family enjoys wakeboarding, wakesurfing and tubing. Wakesurfing is a passion for Wesley. He and his Dad researched wake surfing to figure out how to weight the boat to creat a large surf wake suitable for wake surfing. Together, they put bags in the front and back of their boat that fill up with water to help weight the boat down.
The Hinton family trys to goes boating as often as possible, becasue they all love it so much. Some activities that Wesley likes to do outside include swimming, playing on their trampoline, and riding anything with wheels.
Mother and alumna, Dawn Hinton, ‘93, is beginning to realize the benefits of enrolling her son at the school. She is also thankful that his decision to follow Christ is affecting his actions positively.
“I am so proud of my son,” Hinton said. “I am so thankful that he made the decision to follow the Lord himself. I also am thankful for the many benefits of attending a Christian school. His teachers are giving him biblical perspective on everything he learns and many of his friends are an encouragement in his walk with the Lord. It’s so important to have a biblical foundation when we face life’s trials as well as the body of Christ to help you through.”
Brother and student of the school, Max Hinton, ’22, enjoys having Wesley as a brother. He also likes that he can always check in on him at school, and all the support that his brother gives him.
“I really enjoy Wes being at school with me,” Hinton said. “Wes is a role model to me and to many others, and that is one of the main reasons I enjoy having him as school with me. I also like that I’m always to know where he is and that I can check in on him any time. Even though we don’t always get along, I really love having him as my brother. I really appreciate all of his encouragement, love and support that he gives me.”
