The Eagles traveled to Riverdale on a Saturday to play a mid-day game vs the Riverdale Christian Academy Crusaders. The Eagles were 1-0 in league going into this game and they knew that winning this game would put them in the championship. FC had the desire to win and Riverdale had the desire to knock them off the top.
The Eagles played aggressive straight out of the gate, put up 37 points, and held the Crusaders to 0. Junior Tyler Villines, had two touchdown passes in the first quarter, one to Julian Castro, ‘17, and Tyler Vanderlinden, ‘17. Senior Slater Wade, ran in two touchdowns and Villines added another rushing touchdown. Holding RCA to 0 points was contributed by Eagle defense forcing a fumble on Riverdale’s first offensive play.
The second quarter FC continued their aggression and 13 more points were added by way of ground and air. The Eagle defense also maintained their level of play and once again kept the Crusaders scoreless. The first half would end with the score at 50-0 in favor of the Eagles.
Exhausted and sweat dripping players came back on the field to endure the second half. The sun beating down on the players and fans forced both teams to muster up the strength to play two more quarters of football. The third quarter was a primarily defensive one with only one score being put up by the Eagles. RCA was not yet on the scoreboard due to the power of the Eagle defense.
Riverdale turned on a switch in the final quarter of the game. They held the Eagles to no points and on the final play of the game, finally got on the scoreboard but did not convert their extra point attempt. A prayer including both teams ended the day and the Eagles would walk away with a victory, defeating the Crusaders 57-6.
Austin Duffy, ’19, thought the team played great and was also excited about his first varsity reception.
“I think it was really fun to make my first catch but it was also really scary,” Duffy said. “The team played well and we did a lot of things right and that’s why we got the win”
This win over Riverdale Christian Academy puts the Eagles at 2-0 in league and assures them a spot in the championship game. Next week the Eagles will face off at home for senior night against Stone Ridge Christian in an 11-man competition.
