Around 3:40 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, an accidental shooting incident occurred inside a Sheriff’s office building near the Fresno Airport.

Thousands of friends, family and police community supporters came out to show their respect at his funeral held at Fresno’s Peoples Church, Nov. 9.

Deputy Sergeant Rod Lucas was shot in the chest accidentally by another Fresno County Sheriff’s detective while discussing their equipment. The weapon discharged one round into the chest of Lucas and he was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center. Sgt. Lucas succumbed to his injury later that day and was pronounced deceased.
