John Dooman, ’15, uses a mirror to create a self portrait in art, Aug. 28. The art students have been learning a plethora of different ways to draw since the start of school using a variety of tools, techniques and styles to express themselves artistically.
These include modified contour drawing, which is when the artist only spends 20% of the time looking at what he’s doing and the rest looking at the big picture. Hatching and cross hatching are shading techniques, which is drawing short lines in alternating directions to get a darker shaded region. Last but not least, students learn the abstract art of scumble which simply put is scribbling.
