Located in the town of San Luis Obispo, California stands Morro Rock, a 576-foot tall rock surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.
Morro Rock is the last peak of the nine sisters which extends across the bay. For years, the rock was an important navigational aid for mariners. In 1542, the Portuguese explorer, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo named it “El Morro.”
In 1966, a bill was introduced which transferred the full title to the State of California. The San Luis Obispo County Historical Society and the City of Morro Bay officially declared Morro Rock as a California Registered Historical Landmark.
