Students in fifth period Zoology create fake muscles to put onto a skeleton to get a full understanding of how muscles work, Feb. 24.
To create the dough they mixed flour, water, and salt. They also added red food coloring to make the muscles more life like. Students wrapped the dough in plastic wrap for shaping. They then attached it to the skeleton with pipecleaners to model tendons.
Zoology teacher Karen Walters shares why she assigned the students this assignment and how it benefits their learning process.
“Today in Zoology the students were making models of major muscles of the human,” Walters said. “We just finished studying the bones of humans and comparing them to dogs, horses, and birds. This activity is an extension of our unit on the skeletal-musculo system in animals. This project was given to students to better their understanding on how muscles work, especially how they are attached to bones, we are making a working model using the skeleton.”
The classes’ next unit will focus on how nerves move muscles.
