FC boys tennis begins
As the snow starts to melt and the days get longer, the winter sports season comes to an end, allowing spring sports teams to begin practicing. Tennis season is underway as practices have been going on for the last two weeks. Last year the boys went 9-3 in league and 11-4 overall, finishing second in the West Sierra League.
Tennis coach Robert Foshee believes this year’s team can go far in the playoffs. Many of the preseason practices have been canceled due to excessive of rain. Foshee hopes his team performs well during the season but also displays exceptional character.
“With all the rain, we might have to practice hits and volleys in the gym,” Foshee said. “However, I expect us to compete for a league title and compete for the valley championship. I want my team to learn how to serve Jesus through competition and to enjoy the sport of tennis.”
The number two seed for the team last year was Zach Passmore, ’17. Passmore wants to play his best tennis and make a deep postseason run.
“I’ve played tennis since my freshman year,” Passmore said. “I love the individualism that comes with playing tennis but also being able to play as a team in doubles. My goal this year is to win league and play my hardest in playoffs.”
With every new season, there may also be new players to the game. Trevor Trevino, ’17, is thrilled to begin and get his first experience playing tennis competitively.
“I have been playing tennis for about 8 months,” Trevino said. “I love the pace of the gamed I love how much the game forces you to move back and forth, side to side. My goal is to win the valley championship this year because I believe we have a team whose players are dedicated to working hard but having fun at the same time.”
Matthew Peterson, ‘20, hope to get closer with fellow peers and form stronger bonds.
“This will be my first year playing tennis at high school level,” Peterson said. “I joined tennis because I like hitting the balls and improving at the sport. I hope to get closer with my teammates and coaches.”
The tennis team has a home match against Coalinga at 4 p.m., Feb. 28. Come out and support the team!
