Chemistry teacher Scott Bucher assists Fiona Soto, ’19, during Thursday’s block period lab, Sept. 21.
Bucher betters his students understanding of filtration through a mixtures of separation lab. Students create crystals through fractional crystallization and separate copper sulfate from water. After the copper sulfate is boiled it looses it’s blue color due to the loss of water.
Three strips of paper are placed into test tubes with dots made by markers. As water runs up the pieces of paper, students observe the separation of ink components. Various colors emerge from the original marker color.
Each week’s block schedule day consists of a lab.
