Campus prepares for 33rd annual homecoming week

One of the most exciting and hectic weeks of the year is almost here. Leadership students are busy making any last minute preparations to ensure the 33rd annual homecoming week goes smoothly.

The homecoming theme for this year is “Homecoming for Humanity.” Each class will raise money for a non-profit organization and also depict that organization with their class floats.

The freshman class picked Miss Winkles Pet Adoption Center, the sophomores chose Lanna Coffee Co., the juniors will support Hume Lake and the seniors selected The American Red Cross.

Leadership student Wesley Hinton, ‘20, appreciates the work Lanna Coffee Co. does for villages in Thailand. Hinton hopes to raise funds for the non-profit organization through the sophomore float.

“I like the organization we are supporting,” Hinton said. “Lanna coffee is a local coffee shop that gets it’s coffee from Thailand. When the villages grow coffee for Lanna, they get access to life-saving clean water. Some are also freed from growing for drug lords. The villages also get to hear the gospel as well.”

Associated Student Body treasurer, Griffin Schmidt, ‘19, is excited for the junior float’s theme this year. Overseeing the junior float building, Schmidt hopes the class will come together and construct a winning float.

“We chose to support Hume Lake because our class loved the idea and we just wanted to support what we are doing as a whole,” Schmidt said. “I am very excited for the float building and getting involved with our class. I like the theme for this year and I’m excited to participate.”

The floats are still being worked on, but will be near completed by the end of this upcoming weekend according to Schmidt. He plans to work on the float throughout the week and finish the float homecoming day.

“We have made some progress but we still have a lot of work still to do,” Schmidt said. “We don’t have a lot of people helping right now, probably about 6-8 students in total. So for that reason we are going to be meeting up over this next weekend and as many other days needed to compete the float.”
