The Feather editors created a video to explain how they share the news with their community and school to recognize News Engagement Day, Oct. 3.
Editor-in-chiefs Mariana Fikse, ’18, Sam Cross, ’19, and Alex Rurik, ’19, discuss what the paper covers, what staffers learn, and their challenge to balance article assignments with schoolwork.
News Engagement Day takes place once a year on the first Tuesday of October across the nation, encouraging students to engage in news.
The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) first launched #newsengagementday in 2014.
The First Amendment gives us the power to follow any religion we choose, report on anything even if it is something bad, freedom to peacefully protest, freedom to petition and freedom of speech to let us say anything we want. Knowing these rights is important to function in society. Hunter Raynes, ‘21, explains what this freedom means to him.
“I like having all of this freedom,” Raynes said. “It helps me understand what is happening in this country. It protects us from being persecuted for saying something that other people do not agree with. It creates places where you can have a large variety of news outlets and backgrounds.”
The Feather Online has participated through articles, photos, videos and various social media platforms since the day’s inception. For more information on The Feather’s News Engagement Day, read Jacob Hyatt’s “News Engagement Day emphasizes student involvement” article.
