Today we celebrate News Engagement Day, a day honoring the opportunity students have to engage in the news, Oct. 3.
News Engagement Day was launched in 2014 by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Each year, on the first Tuesday of October, throughout the nation, news statistics are formed and shared. In honor of today, The Feather presents readers with just a few.
In 2016, 30% of Snapchat users used the app primarily to get information about the 2016 Presidential Campaign (via Business Insider).
As of May 2016, a study showed that 62% of people get their news from social media, 18% of which do so very often. In the past four years, as of 2016, news on social media has grown 20% (via Tech Crunch).
Less than one in ten 13-33-year-olds said they were buying newspapers monthly as of 2016. One study showed that after surveying 1,000 13-33-year-olds the top 10 current news sites were CNN, local news channel/site/app, Facebook, Fox, The New York Times, Twitter, NPR, Google News, Buzzfeed and BBC (via Media Post).
