Campus raises breast cancer awareness, benefits Art of Life Cancer Foundation

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so in honor of that, FC’s next home game will be a “Pink Out,” Oct. 20. The Eagles will take on the Laton HS Mustangs. Pink FC spirit wear shirts will be sold at the football game and during the school day on Friday for $10. Shirts can also be preordered throughout the week at lunch. All proceeds will be going to the Art of Life Cancer Foundation.

The Art of Life Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization open to serving all cancer survivors in the Central Valley. They help people who fought all types of cancer, not just breast cancer. The program was founded in 2007 and has since then helped survivors tell their story through art. The Art of Life Cancer Foundation is dedicated to giving them a chance to tell their story and to inspire hope throughout the community and for those battling cancer.

They aim to help survivors express themselves through art, to give them an impression of confidence and a stronger connection with friends and family and even the community.

According to the Art of Life website, their mission is to encourage people affected by cancer to connect with one another and heal through an expression of their story in art.

“The Art of Life program links groups of participants with cancer to local artists to co-create works of art for public viewing,” the website says. “The art represents life in the midst of the cancer journey. For the many people involved, the result is life-giving transformation.”

Student leadership advisor Robert Foshee states the reason for selecting The Art of Life Cancer Foundation as the non-profit cancer charity to support, being due to prior experiences and relationships with the organization.

“There have been many people from school and our community who have had help and interactions from this organization including the music pastor from Peoples Church,” Foshee said. “We also served with them at our last FC Serve Day.”

Alina Davila, ‘19, is excited to get to support The Art of Life Cancer Foundation and see fellow students get involved.

“I’m so excited,” Davila said.  “I love being able to support these causes in any way I can. This idea is awesome! It’s important that we help in all that we can. A theme like this can unify the students because it gets us all to want to get involved and support. I hope to see everyone unified by cheering and getting hyped for the players.”

This weeks game is also Channel 47’s Carl’s Junior Game of the week. The local news station will be on campus during the game filming it and showing highlights. The winning team takes a trip to Carl’s Junior after the game for a “victory celebration.” They will display highlights from the game on local television and give people watching at home a chance to get to know the team.

Football player, Blake Burdan, ’20, is excited about the Pink Out game and that the campus team has been selected as Channel 47’s game of the week. Burdan thinks this is a great opportunity for our school to display our school’s unity.

“I am excited for the Pink Out theme to support the serious cause of breast cancer awareness,” Burdan said. “I think we have always been united and that this is a great opportunity to show our unity. I hope that we can show how good we are and represent FCS in the best way that we can with a big win.”

FC cheerleaders will be partaking in the Pink Out theme as well by wearing pink bows and socks. Cheerleader Adalyn Richardson, ’21, thinks the theme can raise awareness and unity and she wants to show the community our sense of unity.

“I think it will build awareness and unity through us coming together for a good cause,” Richardson said. “It will bring unity because everyone is focused on achieving one goal. We will show the community how we can come together to bring awareness through our school to the public.”

Come out and support your Eagles through purchasing a shirt and cheering on the home team at 7 p.m., Oct. 20.
