With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, Feather staff member Kaden Friesen, ’21, asks elementary campus students about what they are thankful for.
We asked 15 elementary students what they are most thankful for. They responded with various unique answers, including Satchel Cortez.
“I am thankful that I am not poor and get to go to such an amazing school,” Cortez said.
Many students commented that they were thankful for God, while others mentioned that they are thankful for their family’s and friends.
Thanksgiving is a time of celebration for family’s around the world that reaches back to the very roots of our country. Family’s traditionally come together for a feast on the fourth Thursday of November.
While Thanksgiving is a national holiday, it was not always this way. Days of Thanksgiving have been declared since the dawn of our nation; the first was declared by the Continental Congress after the ratification of the constitution.
After this it was mostly states that would herald these dates until president Abraham Lincoln declared a national Thanksgiving day to promote unity. Presidents succeeding Lincoln would also each appoint a day of thanksgiving until president Franklin Roosevelt made the day a permanent holiday in the year 1942 by placing it on fourth Thursday of November.
