One day a year is set-aside to show appreciation to the contributions of special women all across America. They serve us daily and sacrifice their time and lives to help us grow and enjoy life.
These incredible women are our mothers. Outside their already busy schedules, a small group of campus moms still pursue additional involvement in their children?s lives.
Moms in Touch have been supporting students and teachers for many years. The purpose these moms seek to fulfill and uphold is not only a professed Christian label, but also a real and actual faith lived out with purpose.
Mary Ann Fujihara has been a committed leader of Moms in Touch since her daughter, senior April Fujihara, was in elementary school. Along with Fujihara, Jana Pearson, mother of senior Jordan Hogue, leads other moms in a morning-prayer group.
Moms in Touch consist of about three to six women committed to pray for teachers and students alike. Each mom that attends is assigned to pray for specific faculty and students.
?We never run out of things to pray for,? Fujihara said. ?We see our teachers as missionaries. These teachers could get paid a lot more at other schools.?
The main purpose these moms hope to accomplish is to encourage a spirit of righteousness on campus through prayer.
?We want the school to not just be Christian by name,? Fujihara said. ?We desire for students to have a growing and loving heart for the Lord.?
At each prayer meeting the moms focus on the A.C.T.S. of prayer. This pseudonym for adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication, provides guidelines for prayer time.
Another group that involves parents in encouraging faculty and students on campus is The Parent Support Network [PSN]. PSN seeks to support faculty and students through fundraisers.
Julie Wills and Carol Anderson, moms of seniors Mikey Wills and Meghan Anderson, lead the way with involvement from other devoted parents. PSN focuses on staff appreciation and rewarding hard working students.
PSN hosts a pizza lunch about once a month for students. The money raised goes toward buying the award plaques that are handed to outstanding students every semester.
In addition to pizza, the Network also provides the student-of-the-month candy bars students receive upon redeeming their certificates. PSN also provides a monthly breakfast for the teachers as well as periodic luncheons.
Another fundraiser is the PSN night out at Second Space Theater. The money earned goes to the senior grad night fund.
The most notable contribution from PSN is the scholarship that they award to one senior boy and girl at the end of the year. Applicants must meet certain criteria, but any senior is encouraged to apply.
The involvement of campus parents provides teachers the needed support as they face daily conflicts and issues. The various parent involvements encourage the faculty on campus.
?A school can?t function successfully without an auxiliary group to support its acts,? Molly Sargent, senior English teacher, said. ?Parents support through encouraging the faculty and students alike. It is nice to know there are others who share in our goals.?
For those interested in getting involved in the different support groups on campus, Moms in Touch meets for prayer every Friday from 8-9 A.M. in 204 at the Peoples Church campus.
