Carlee Whipple, ’18, Jenna Bynum, ’18, and Kayden Marquez, ’20, sort Capri Suns and pack them in large boxes at the Community Food Bank during the sixth annual serve day, March 1.

Students and teachers served at various locations such as; Community Food Bank, Raintree Convalescent home, Wesley United Church, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, FIRM and Reading Heart. 

Over 515 backpacks filled with donated food items were packed by 31 students at the Community Food Bank. 40 million pounds of food was distributed in 2017 to five counties through 220 local agencies. With over 5,000 volunteers a year, the food bank is encouraging the community to support and serve during the week M-F.

At ReStore, students work to assemble furniture, disassemble fans, and stock supplies. The shop sells new and gently used home improvement items to any customer. All of the profits from ReStore go to construction of new Habitat homes. Habitat for humanity is an international nonprofit in 70 countries which has 1,400 affiliates in the United States!

Reading Heart is a world wide organization, started by Danay Ferguson, an 11 year old with a passion for education and helping the less fortunate. Over 55 students participate in their sorting party, sorting books into grade levels. Over 10,000 books were donated by the community and after sorting, will be distributed into elementary schools as well as to kids in hospitals.

Students also Volunteered at Wesley United Church, they sorted through clothes and organized their thrift store. Originally, students were assigned garden work, but it was cancelled due to rain.

FIRM is a local non-profit organization which helps Southeastern Asians assimilate into Fresno. The program helps 15,000 refugees and immigrants each year. Students help clean up the facilities with maintenance and construction to various rooms in the building.
