Varsity golf begins practicing in preparation for their first match, Feb. 27.

This year, the boys will practice at Copper River Country Club. FC is the only high school with the privilege to practice at the course, the only other team practicing at Copper is Fresno State.

Last year, the golf team struggled to build big enough of a squad to compete for the league championship. Despite the numerous wins and records set by the now graduated Michael Cliff, ‘17, the team was not able to move on into playoffs.

This year, the boys team will have a full squad of 6, making them eligible for league tournament play.

Last years coach of 11 years, Jeff Hopper, stepped out of the coaching position due to health complications. Taking his position will be coach Brent Deffenbacher, Deffenbacher is a campus parent, and the pastor of discipleship and teaching at CrossCity Christian Church. Coaching alongside Deffenbacher will be longtime golfer, Vic Gunderson, and former Fresno State player, Cameron DeLaere.

Deffenbacher feels hopeful about the outcome of this years golf season.

“I’m optimistic with the interest in this years FC Golf Team,” Deffenbacher said. “With three returning players from last years team and three new players joining the team this year, I believe we will not only be competitive in preseason play but be a strong contender during league play.”

The boys continue to practice as they prepare for their first match against Washington Union, March. 12.
