Team rebuilds with new head coach

Golf is one of the most recent official sports that Fresno Christian has started competing in. Many students who play outside of school were excited to compete with FC. This year Brent Deffenbacher is coaching. It is his first year coaching the team and he feels optimistic about the team this year. 

Zane Muñoz, ‘21, speaks about how he feels about the upcoming season and the team’s chances. Muñoz, a lifer at FC, looks forward to the upcoming season and all that it contains.

“It is my first year doing golf and so far I have been having a lot of fun,” Muñoz said. “I am feeling optimistic about the team and our ability to do well. Since it is my first time playing golf, I also think I will get better throughout the season.”

The team will be competing in a number of different matches throughout this year. Their first match, against Washington Union is to be held, March 12. Players practice at Copper River and get to swings down.

There was unable to be a girls team this year due to a lack of players so this years team consist of returners Blake Deffenbacher, ’20, Charles Gong, ’21, and Julian Segura, ’21. New to the team players, Zane Munoz, ’21, Matthew Peterson, ’20, and Matthew Sue, ’18, look to improve their abilities and get a new grasp on a different sport.

Charles Gong, ’20, is a second year golfer and lifer at Fresno Christian. Gong expects a fun season and is looking forward to all that it holds.

“I joined golf because I thought it would be fun and they have early dismissals,” Gong said. “My favorite part so far is the car rides on the way to practice. I expect a descent season and that we will have a lot of fun. I am most looking forward to the 9A.M. dismissals.”

Coming off of a strong year, golf athletes prepare and train to improve swings and hits. Michael Cliff, ’17, a golfer on last years golf team, achieved large accomplishments, winning the Len Ross Fresno City Junior Amateur Golf Tournament. Starting fresh with a new group of golfers, coach Deffenbacher places his goals for the team up front.
