Senior Kaylie Clem, third year photojournalist for The Feather, decided to showcase four of her personal photos at the Big Fresno Fair, by entering in the junior photography division, Oct. 10. Clem earned three first place blue ribbons.
With encouragement from her mom, Rhonda Clem, Kaylie entered her photos, not expecting much from her entry. To her surprise, she received exciting news as three of her photos placed first, with the fourth placing third.
Kaylie has photographed for The Feather since 2016. As a first year photographer, she had to overcome obstacles of how to work a camera and developing techniques of her own.
Kaylie shares about her favorite photo that she entered into the fair. This photo received a blue ribbon at the Big Fresno Fair.
“My favorite picture is the one titled, ‘Seeing Through the Flowers’,” Kaylie said, “because when I took the picture, I wasn’t even looking through the camera. Those flowers were located on the slope of the hill I was standing on. So I had to hold the camera at my feet and listen to the lens focus. Once I heard the lens focus the way I felt was right, I took the picture, resulting in what you see.”
Kaylie continues developing camera skills by mentoring younger high school students who share the same passion for photography. She hopes that others who want to share their photos will find the courage to do so.
“Anyone considering showcasing their photos should do it,” Kaylie said. “Photography is such a beautiful form of art, and every photo is a story. So by sharing your photos, you are sharing your story.”
When Kaylie isn’t taking pictures, you can find her on the volleyball court. Four years playing varsity volleyball and mentoring young high school students allowed Kaylie to develop her leadership skills and helped her become more comfortable behind a camera lens.
