Fresno Christian Schools opened its doors to elementary students in 1977. With the support of four local churches, the school aimed to offer quality education, a strong Christian atmosphere, and role models in the lives of staff and teachers.
Thirty years later the campus expanded to include a K-12 system complete with athletics and performing arts programs.
?Though the student body has not grown much, the school is more established and accepted by other schools,? Scott Callisch, teacher and coach for 23 years, said. ?We no longer have to beg other schools to reluctantly compete with us.?
Changes occurred over the past 30 years, which affected the staff and student body including the teachers’ training program. In the last five years the campus became a teacher induction granting school. This grant allows faculty to be credited while working.
?Not only does the adoption of this program enable the school to attract more teachers,? Superintendent Tim Wilkins said, ?but it also proves to the state of California that we meet or exceed their educational requirements.
Plans for future curriculum and campus are underway.
?The school is in the midst of raising money for a new building that would give it a permanent home,? Superintendent Wilkins said. ?Though these are plans for the future, we are currently in the process of expanding our curriculum so that by the time we have gathered enough funds the school will be ready for the move.?
Four members of the administration staff for worked at the campus for 28 years, and find the anniversary an example of the strength of the school.
?To the teachers and staff who have been here, the 30th anniversary is a symbol of establishment and a reassurance that we are doing God?s work,? Callisch said.
Students agree that the anniversary represents the importance of the school for the community as well as individuals.
?It is nice to know our school has impacted the community for three decades,? Katelyn Aydelotte, ?08 said. ?It is neat to think that so many people have experienced our school.?
Although the anniversary recognizes 30 years of campus history, some are anticipating the future.
?The 30th anniversary is not so much about celebrating the past as looking forward to the future,? Superintendent Wilkins said.
In an effort to recognize Fresno Christian Schools’ history, The Feather is requesting alumni to share their high school memories over the coming months through stories and photo essays. Please e-mail favorite tales and pictures to [email protected].
