Thirty-six percent of Fresno Christian high school students are continually involved in sports throughout the year. This equates to 70-80 out of 206 students held accountable by the athletic department for academic progress.
Junior Annabelle Messer is involved with year round soccer participating both on school and club, along with running track during the spring, Jan. 18.
Student athletes are held to responsibilities not only in the classroom but on sports team as well. Annual quarterly grade checks are administered to students each semester. Students must maintain at least a 2.0, in order to continue playing on a team.
Athletic Director, Jonathan Penberthy, discusses how CIF regulations and FC expectations are met.
“Per CIF rules they need to have a 2.0 and no more than 1 ‘F’,” Penberthy said. “Our expectations at Fresno Christian are for the students to do their best in the classroom, and we believe that if the students are doing that, then we won’t have to worry about any of our students maintaining a 2.0 or higher. We identify the students who grades are not where we think they should be and check them on a weekly basis.”
Sports are divided into three seasons, fall, winter, and spring. This gives each student the opportunity to play up to three sports, with a possibility of four if involved in year round FC cheer.
Three sport athlete Alina Davila, ’19, shares what it takes to maintain grades while being involved with many sports.
“Playing three sports means I don’t get a break and I don’t get to ever go home after school to do homework or study,” Davila said. “However, sports makes me work hard to achieve my goals which helps me with academic progress and my time management. It definitely is hard to maintain my grades because I don’t have as much time to do my homework and I have to get out of school early for games.”
Students involved in sports continue to practice over summer in preparation for their upcoming season, which lengthens their commitment.
