Hume Lake winter camp wouldn’t be the same without the annual Broom Hockey tournament, Jan. 12. Four Fresno Christian girls participated along with three others in the tournament, placing second.
High school students in teams of six to eight sign up and begin tournaments in the late morning. Split between gender and grade level, four different tournaments take place with junior high boys, junior high girls, high school boys and high school girls.
Throughout the day, elimination rounds take place until the final rounds. Each bracket would crown the winning team.
Originated in Canada around the beginning of the 20th century, Broomball or “Broom Hockey” started by a group of men playing on ice. Broomball can be played on many icy surfaces and has rules and strategies similar to those of hockey.
Along with Broom Hockey, students were aloud to participate in the ice skate, sliding down the tube run, swing on the giant swing, snowboard down the hill, ride on the mechanical buffalo or play indoor reball.
