Happy birthday to birthday buddies Andrea Donaghe and Kyle Dodson! FC high school English teachers celebrate their birthdays, just a day apart.
Familiar faces on campus, the duo splits high school English class. Donaghe teaches English 10, 12 and AP literature and language, while Dodson teaches English 9, 11. The birthday buddies lead other elective classes as well; Donaghe advises HS yearbook and Dodson organizes JH and HS drama.
Here are some fun facts about the duo:
What is your favorite quote?
Donaghe: “…and though she be but little, she is fierce.” -Shakespeare
Dodson: Henry V’s St. Crispin’s Day Speech, Act IV.iii. It’s long so I’m not going to type it all out, but I have it printed right next to my desk and I read it at least once a week.
What was your favorite subject in high school? Why?
Donaghe: Senior English with Mr. Kasparian. He taught the class as though it was a college class. We had the freedom to talk about politics, drugs, alcohol, issues we were having in what we felt was a safe space. He treated all of us as adults.
Dodson: My favorite subject in high school changed depending upon my mood, though the most consistent enjoyment came from my drama classes. Drama always provided me the freedom to try new things, use my brain in a different way than my other classes, and keep me on my toes.
What is the funniest thing to ever happen in your classroom?
Donaghe: The funniest thing that has happened in my classroom was a skit performed for the gender unit with Bailey Brogan, Justin Houts and Andrew Moore.
Dodson: Every year whenever I have a male student act out Romeo & Juliet to a doll with a wig on. It really separates the men from the boys depending on which male students go all out with it and those that are too embarrassed to make a show of it.
What is your most embarrassing moment?
Donaghe: I was running in soccer sophomore year and my foot got caught in a gopher hole and I fell down.
Dodson: As a student, I danced with my AP English teacher junior year to “Jump in the Line” by Harry Belafonte. On purpose.
Dodson has been teaching a total of six years, five of which have been at FC. This is Donaghe’s fifth year at FC, teaching eight years previous at various schools.
Be sure to wish Donaghe and Dodson a happy birthday on their actual birthdays: Dodson, Jan. 19 and Donaghe, Jan. 20.
