Senior Darrin Williams receives a haircut in Kimberly Bell’s seventh period home economics class, Jan. 28. Each year, Bell’s class learns how to cut hair as as the end to their life skills unit. Cutting hair at home can save up to $25 per month!
The goal of home economics is to teach students how to learn life skills while they are still in school. In addition, both junior highers and high schoolers can take this class. The class is split into 20 sections such as nutrition, life skills, personal finances and sewing.
Their next unit will be finances and relationships. In this unit students learn to calculate expenses and pay bills. In addition, students learn how to recognize all the different love languages.
Home economics teacher of three years Kimberly Bell sees her class as an opportunity for students at Fresno Christian to learn to live successfully on their own.
“My hope are that the students will become comfortable with all these topics and be successful living on their own or taking care of themselves,” Bell said. “Success and confidence in their abilities is the goal. I wanted to introduce my students to the fact that they can learn these things easily and be able to do them on their own.”
