Teacher Angie Counts Math III classes host guest speakers David Kwalasser and Mauro Weyant, Feb. 27. Kwalwasser and Weyant work as part of the engineering department for California’s High-Speed rail.
California’s High-Speed rail could not come into play without surveyors such as Kwalwasser and Weyant. The jobs of surveyors are to make sure the railway does not interfere with existing roads. In order to do this, over-crossings and under-crossings have to be designed.
Surveyors are also responsible for the curvature of the train tracks. Trains are fixed axle vehicles. This means that their wheels do not turn as the wheels of a car would. Kwalwasser and Weyant make sure that the curve of the tracks is not too drastic but sharp enough to turn the train.
Junior Danielle Foster enjoyed hearing Weyant and Kwalwasser speak about how math pertains to surveying.
“What surprised me the most is the amount of work that they have to put in,” Foster said. “I also thought it was interesting how important they’re job is to the government and the way our state functions. I’m planning on going into the engineering field and math is definitely a big part of that, so learning about how I can apply that to a future job was a cool opportunity.”
Math III honors students will be assigned a two-page essay as their project of the quarter.
