The Broadway play Wicked comes to Fresno, California to perform in the William Saroyan Theatre as a part of their tour, March 23.
Wicked is written by Stephen Schwartz and based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire. The play itself is an alternate telling of the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, and the 1900 novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The play includes references to both novel and film.
Rather than the original main character of Dorothy and her dog Toto, this spin on the story focuses on Elphaba: the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda: the Good Witch.
The theme of the play reflects friendship, good v. evil and remaining true to who you are. It shows these things through the growth of Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship and their character developement along the way.
Some of the songs performed are ‘Defying Gravity’, ‘For Good’ and ‘Popular’.
The first opening to the play on Broadway took place, Oct 30. 2003. The show has been an impactful mark in the entertainment world. In 2004, Wicked won three Tony awards and a Grammy for their musical album of the show.
Last year in New York, New York, The Feather staff attended the show on Broadway as a part of their NY trip for the spring CSPA conference, March 11.
